Árbær Open Air Museum

Árbær Open Air Museum, which is mostly closed during the winter, will open few of its old houses around the museum square during the winter break October 20 -24, 2016 from 13:00-16:00. All adults accompanied by children get free admission to the museum during those days.

October 20, 21 and 22 between 14:00-16:00 there will be a workshop for families in the house Lækjargata 4 in conjunction with the exhibition Labyrinth of the plastic by Jónborg Sigurdardottir. This traveling exhibition aims to raise awareness about the overuse of plastic in the world. Participants will create art work using recycled plastic and thereby giving it a new life. In this same building there is also an interesting exhibition called Consumption – Reykjavík in the 20th century.

In a white house called Landakot there is an exhibition called Come and play! where children are allowed to play with diverse toys that children in Iceland used through the 20th century.

Reykjavík Maritime Museum

On Monday October 24 there will be a family workshop in Reykjavík Maritime Museum in partnership with the Biophilia educational project. Children and adults will be encouraged to make use of creativity by connecting together music, technology and science in a new way and learn through active participation, experimentation, play and creativity.

Geologist Snæbjörn Guðmundsson will give a talk about the tension in the Earth’s crust and movements of the Earth’s plates. The artist Curver Thoroddsen explores music cords and music tension. Together they connect the two, by making experiments and looking into this phenomenon with the help of tablet and the Biophilia app by Björk.

The workshop is intended for children 10-12 year old. The workshop begins at 13:00. The workshop is free of charge but number of participants is limited, registration on safnfraedsla@reykjavik.is.

The Settlement Exhibition

Adults accompanied by children will get free admission to The Settlement Exhibition during winter break October 20- 24, 2016.

The exhibition revolves around the relics of a tenth century longhouse preserved in its original location. Families can also have fun bringing the ancient Viking ways to life with the museum’s interactive multimedia technology. In the family corner there will be some of the oldest board games available as well as a rune puzzle and paper for drawing and colouring.

The exhibition is open daily from 09:00-20:00.

Reykjavík Museum of Photography

Families are encouraged to visit Reykjavík Museum of Photography during the winter break and view the unique exhibition PORTRAITS byHasselblad Award Winners. This exhibition features a selection of works of seven Hasselblad Award winners from the late 1940s until 2014. This is probably the most important exhibition that has ever been on display in the museum and should not be missed by anyone.

Everybody is welcome, free admission!

The exhibition is open Monday – Thursday 12:00 – 19:00, Friday 12:00 – 18:00 and weekends 13:00 – 17:00.
