Midsummer Festival

Come celebrate Swedish Midsommar / Icelandic Jónsmessa with us! Árbær Open Air Museum in collaboration with the Swedish Society in Iceland, and the Reykjavík Folk Dance Society, invite you to a family-friendly festival with a midsummer theme! Free admission for anyone wearing a national costume, children up to 17 years old, people with disabilities, and Reykjavík Culture Card holders.
If you’d like to help decorate the maypole, we’ll begin at 11:00, and the maypole will be raised at 12:00. The main festivities begin at 13:00, starting with the raising of the maypole. Traditional folk dances will follow, including classic Swedish ring dances like Små Grodorna and more. Between the dances, songs by the Swedish-Dutch singer Cornelis Vreeswijk will be performed, and members of the Reykjavík Folk Dance Society will showcase traditional Icelandic dance steps. The program will be repeated at 15:00. You can also make your own flower crown at a workshop led by floral designers Blómdís and Jóndís. Pre-registration is required, and the workshop costs 3,000 ISK. Please register here on Reykjavík City Museum's website. Everyone is warmly welcome! Accessibility: The museum’s footpaths are mainly gravel. Many historic houses have steps and thresholds. Service dogs are welcome. Public Transport: Nearest bus stop: Árbæjarsafn (1-minute walk).
