Árbæjarsafn er útisafn sem var stofnað árið 1957 en auk Árbæjar eru þar yfir tuttugu hús, sem mynda torg, þorp og sveit. Í Árbæjarsafni er leitast við að gefa hugmynd um byggingalist og lifnaðarhætti í Reykjavík á 19. og 20. öld. Hvert og eitt hús geymir annaðhvort sjálfstæða sögusýningu eða þá að þar er sýnt dæmigert heimili frá ákveðnu tímabili. Á safninu má einnig sjá gamaldags verkstæði ýmiskonar þar sem sjá má dæmigerða aðstöðu, tækni og tól.

Árbær was an established farm well into the 20th century, and the museum opened there in 1957. Árbær is now an open-air museum with more than 20 buildings which form a town square, a village and a farm. Most of the buildings have been relocated from central Reykjavik. The Museum seeks to give an idea of architecture and way of life in Reykjavik in the 19th and 20th centuries. Each house contains either an independent historical exhibition or a typical home from a specific period. The museum also houses old-fashioned workshops of typical facilities, technology and tools.

The guide takes guests to all the main houses of the museum and tells their story.

Aðgengi er gott í Aðalstræti. Athugið þó að það er fremur lítil lýsing inni í sýningarsal hjá skálarústinni og þar er gólfið ójafnt á köflum. Leiðsöguhundar eru velkomnir í safnið.

Accessibility for people with disabilities is good. However, the exhibition is dimly lit, and the floor is uneven in several places. Guide dogs are welcome.

Baktus, the city cat, visits The Settlement Exhibition almost daily. During the winter school break, we invite children to follow Baktus's footsteps through the exhibition and see what he finds most interesting! Admission is free for children and their accompanying adults.

Grunnsýningin Fiskur & fólk - sjósókn í 150 ár fjallar um sögu fiskveiða á Íslandi, frá því árabátar viku fyrir stórskipaútgerð á síðustu áratugum 19. aldar og allt fram yfir aldamótin 2000. Þessi margslungna saga er sögð frá sjónarhóli stærsta útgerðarbæjar landsins, Reykjavíkur. Umgjörðin á Sjóminjasafninu við Grandagarð er viðeigandi, en safnhúsið hýsti áður blómlega fiskvinnslu.
Aðgengi fyrir hreyfihamlaða er gott á Sjóminjasafninu, sérstaklega við inngang Grandagarðsmegin. Lyfta er á milli hæða.

We have family activity boards with fun games that lead you through the museum‘s permanent exhibition, Fish & Folk. Three different levels of difficulty are available depending on the children's ability and age. Entry is free for children and their accompanying adults. The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00.

The main exhibition Fish & folk - 150 years of fisheries, covers the history of fishing in Iceland, from the time when rowing boats gave way to large fishing vessels in the late 19th century, through to the 21st century. This complex story is told from the perspective of the country's largest fishing town, Reykjavík. The setting at the Maritime Museum at Grandagarður is appropriate, as the museum building used to house a thriving fish processing plant.
Accessibility for people with disabilities is good at the museum, especially at the entrance on the Grandagarður side. There is an elevator between the floors.

Imagine it’s the future! Draw a picture of what you think animals and kids will do together in 2125. We will use 100-year-old photographs as inspiration and draw pictures of children and animals in 100 years.

Í Kornhúsinu á Árbæjarsafni er sýningin Vaxtaverkir sem gefur innsýn í veröld grunnskólabarna í Reykjavík á árabilinu 1898-1974. Vaxtaverkir er upplifunarsýning með áherslu á sköpun, fræðslu, ímyndunarafl og leikgleði. Hægt er að fá ratleikinn útprentaðan í móttöku safnsins eða nota QR-kóða sem gefinn er upp á safninu. Leikurinn hefst á torgi safnsins.
Aðgengi: Gangstígar á safnsvæðinu eru flestir malarstígar. Inn í flest húsin er gengið upp eitt þrep eða yfir þröskuld. Hjálparhundar eru velkomnir í safnið.
Strætisvagnar: Næsta stoppistöð heitir Árbæjarsafn (1 mín. gangur). Aðrar nálægar stoppistöðvar heita Laxakvísl og Fagribær (5-6 mín. gangur).

Growing Pains is an experiential exhibition emphasizing creativity, education, imagination, and playfulness. Visitors get an insight into the world of primary school children in Reykjavík between 1898 and 1974. Today, most people living in Iceland take education for granted and even find it hard to imagine that it was not a given. However, it was not so long ago that education was considered a human right.
You can get a printout of the treasure hunt at the museum reception or use the QR code provided at the museum. The game starts in the museum square.
Accessibility: The museum’s footpaths are mainly gravel. Many historic houses have steps and thresholds. Service dogs are welcome.

Before submitting an exhibition proposal to the Reykjavík City Museum, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the museum's guiding principles and mission and the museum's exhibition policy.
Please view the museum's website where each exhibition location is specified. It is important that the inquirer evaluates his own work in the context of the museum's policy and its exhibition history before sending the exhibition request.

Reykjavík City Museum's exhibition committee reviews all requests every four months. Exhibition requests are answered after committee meetings. It should be noted that Reykjavík City Museum receives a large number of inquiries every year.
If the exhibition request is accepted, we will contact you and discuss the next steps. If not, we thank you very much for the request and will let you know as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to make suggestions, comments or write a report regarding rejected exhibition requests. Please note that exhibitions are often booked up to 24 months in advance.
