Open Preservation Building at Koparslétta - Guided Tour in Icelandic *Registration required**

The Reykjavík City Museum preserves approximately 35,000 artefacts in its collections, in addition to boats and historic buildings at Árbær Open Air Museum, as well as around 5 million photographs. What are commonly referred to as “storage facilities” are known within the museum as preservation buildings, as they are active workspaces where collection management takes place throughout the year. The museum operates several such facilities, each serving a different purpose and housing different types of objects, ranging from screwdrivers, toys, and textiles to large industrial machinery and fire engines. It is these larger artefacts that are housed in the museum’s newest preservation building at Koparslétta. The museum took possession of the building in early summer 2023. Considerable work still remains to be done in cataloguing, cleaning, repackaging, photographing, and researching the items stored there. This ongoing work is at the heart of what museum collections management involves throughout the year. This event is held on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. The preservation building has good accessibility, and parking is available on site.
