The Viðey Chess Tournament

Prepare to experience a unique chess tournament, set in the historic Viðey house on Sunday, 19 July, at 13:00. This event, organized by the Reykjavík Chess Club and hosted by Elding Ferry Company and Reykjavík City Museum, promises a memorable chess experience in a one-of-a-kind location.

The tournament is open to all chess enthusiasts and potential participants. It's an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills and enjoy the game. Participation is free, with the only cost being the ferry. Participants will engage in nine rounds with a pause after round 5, each with a time limit of 3 + 2 (3 minutes per person and 2 seconds for each move). The event will take place in a warm and inviting environment on the upper floor of Viðey house, where you can purchase delicious refreshments to energise you during the competition. The maximum number of competitors is 50. Please register for the tournament using the link provided in the event. We recommend booking your ferry ticket at www.elding.is at the same time as registering for the tournament. Prizes for the tournament are: – 1st place: 15,000 ISK – 2nd place: 10,000 ISK – 3rd place: 5,000 ISK The ferry sails from Skarfabakki according to schedule. The ferry fee back-and-forth is ISK 2,500 for adults and ISK 1,250 for children 7 - 17 years accompanied by adults. Younger children accompanied by adults are free (max three children per adult). Holders of the Reykjavík Culture Card get a 10% discount on the ferry ticket, and holders of the City Card sail for free. Accessibility: The ferry service to Viðey Island leaves from Skarfabakki Harbour and is accessed via a gangway, which is variably steep depending on the tide. Therefore, access for people with reduced mobility is greatly restricted. Guide dogs are welcome at the museum.
