Ancient Roots of Árbær in the museum building Landakot/ÍR House

The exhibition “Ancient Roots of Árbær” is based on the archaeological excavation that has taken place at the Árbær farm site at the Árbær Open Air Museum since 2016.
The aim of the excavation is to answer questions related to the origins and development of settlement in Árbær, and particularly why Árbær was originally chosen as a place to live. Was it because of the salmon in the Elliða rivers? Was Árbær originally a shieling belonging to the farms Gufunes or Vík? Did a settler perhaps build a longhouse in Árbær as early as the 9th century? The results of the research will shed light on the development of the community from the earliest centuries of settlement in the area.
