Festival culture is the theme of Daníel Perez Eðvarðsson‘s exhibition in Skotið.
On display are photographs from Andalusia, Spain, which the artist took during the first winter he was living in Spain between 2021-2022. Perez is half-Spanish, raised in Iceland. Parallel to the black and white prints from Spain, colour photographs from the annual Þjóðhátíð festival in Iceland‘s Westman Islands are shown, taken in the summer of 2023. Thus, the exhibition addresses festival culture, of Catholics on the one hand and of Icelanders on the other.


The leitmotiv, connecting these two subjects, is the work "La Gioconda", a photo of Ísabella Lilja, which is a reference to Mona Lisa.

The work of Mona Lisa can be interpreted as if it was a traditional Maria image, which is the theory of the Holy Virgin, pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. By referencing the Virgin, the idea is formed that the Virgin of the Valley is celebrated at a festive occasion and thus, the solemnity of these two worlds is united by celebrating the Virgin with a religious reference of Christianity. 

Daníel uses various media in his art making. In the exhibition are analogue photographs, as well as digital and polaroid photos. Sound-recording and video are also part of his artistic creation.
