Giita Hammond - View from the Sea - a homage to friendship and the sea

The sea is old, deep and turbulent but quickly becomes soothingly soft, embracing and comforting. 'View from the Sea' is dreamlike, shot with the same low angle and with a small part of the image in focus. It is as if the viewer is also in the sea with them.

The photos are taken 50-100 meters from shore around Sandycove and the Forty Foot in Dublin, in various weather and times of the day. At first, Giita started documenting these swims to treasure and keep a record of this strange period. The project then evolved and became much more personal and poignant as time passed. The result was 'View from the Sea' - an ode to the sea and women's friendship.

Giita Hammond is of Icelandic and Irish descent. She has been involved in photography and visual art since a young age. At age 20, she moved from Iceland to Dublin, Ireland, first to study multimedia and later photography at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT), where she completed her B.A. degree. Giita's art is characterized by contemporary images inspired by nature, water, and natural light.

Besides working as a freelance photographer, Giita has taught photography for about ten years. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. These include two solo exhibitions in Dublin last year: 'Maureen', which is a personal work about her Irish grandmother struggling with dementia and 'View from the Sea', which was exhibited at The Darkroom in Dublin during the Photo Ireland Festival in July 2022 and was partly funded by The Arts Council of Ireland. After decades of absence, Giita has moved back to Reykjavík with her family and is working on personal projects.
