Guðmundur W. Vilhjálms­son│Memories in Photographs

Guðmundur W. Vilhjálmsson has been photographing actively for more than fifty years and his artistic creation is as fertile today as it was when he was starting out. Vilhjálmsson was one of the members of “The little Club of Photography” which opened an exhibition at The National Museum of Iceland´s notorious Bogasalur gallery in 1961. The exhibition was a turning point in the history of Icelandic photography as the photographs were abstract, an approach which had not commonly been used before in photography in Iceland. 

In an article published in the Icelandic magazine Vikan says: “this exhibition has generated discussions about the possibility that this kind of photography could play an important role for interior decoration and that the photos had been “elevated to new heights” with their artistic value. 
It is therefore a great honour for the Reykjavík Museum of Photography to show the works of Vilhjálmsson which comprise unique colour photography from „old Reykjavík“ together with various photographs where his abstract ideas play the leading role.
