Laimonas Dom Baranauskas│Years in Between

The idea that beauty is only found in youth is persistent in society. The goal of Laimonas Dom Baranauskas with the exhibition "Years in Between" is to challenge this societal notion by showing the beauty and uniqueness that comes with age.

In the exhibition, five women are portrayed, aged between around fifty and eighty. In order to achieve timeless features in the human face, Laimonas took the portraits in black and white, emphasizing the timeless nature of the human face and allowing the viewers to focus on the expressions and features of the women from the past and the present.  He photographed  each woman once, then combined a newly taken photo with an old studio portrait of that person, creating a gap of 30-60 years between the two portraits. With this method, Laimonas examines the concept of aging and how our facial features change over time. This also shows that our face remains the same as time goes by.

The purpose of this project can be found in Laimonas's childhood when he became fascinated by his parents' old photo albums with photos taken of moments from their lives, especially school photos of them, many of which were gifts with well wishes on the back. When he started looking at these photo albums much later, he noticed how his parents changed, how their hair started to turn gray and wrinkles appeared. He was inspired by his discovery and it became his final project at the Technical College in Iceland in 2022.



Drawing on his multifaceted skill set in studio photography and photo editing, he discovered that he could depict the passage of time visually in portraits. By merging old studio photographs from old photo albums with newly captured images and metaculously replicating the original lighting, he was able to showcase the profound impact of time has on people's faces while revealing the enduring and unchanging essence. In the exhibition, Laimonas invites the viewer to reflect on the timeless nature of humanity amidst the ever changing flux of life.

Laimonas was born in Lithuania but has lived in Iceland since 2010. He graduated in photography from the Technical College in December 2022. He has been running his photography studio Sunday & White Studio since 2014 in Reykjavík, where he lives.
