Reykjavík Museum of Photography

. In 2008, the artist Lisa Blatt lived in Antarctica for two months and camped for more than one month, as a grantee of the National Science Foundation’s Artists and Writers Program in Antarctica. Polar Extremes, a result from this journey, portrays the fragility, beauty and criticality of Antarctica. During her stay Blatt writes in her journal:   

...being on this glacier is like being on the moon. quiet, silent, strong, mysterious, beautiful, varied and unforgiving... we add and subtract layers as we walk, then stop, the wind picks up and then slows. how many people have been fortunate enough to stand where we stand, see what we see, feel the magnitude of this place? 

Blatt´s work explores how landscape may be identified by what is not visible, what is memory or what is trace (f.ex. historical events with no remaining visible evidence like radiation from test bombs.) It examines the intersection between the still and moving image, nature and culture, perception, and the political and historical implications of place.  The work straddles the representational and perceptual—how one may see the landscape (both “natural” and “cultural”) as well as how landscape may represent both being and non being, presence and absence, infinity and finality. 

Lisa K. Blatt’s photography and video installations have been included in international and domestic exhibitions, including: Sound Design for Future Films, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2008), the Shanghai Biennial (2007) at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, Recognise at Contemporary Art Platform in London, England and Paranoia at the Freud Museum in London, England both in 2007; and Proyecto Circo at the 8th Havana Biennial in Havana, Cuba.  “Night Light” at Mills College Art Museum. (2008). Particulate Matter, First Look at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York and New Landscape Photography at Baxter Chang Patri Fine Arts in San Francisco, California.
