Flat 5, an exhibition by María Kristín Steinsson,  is a series of 15 photographs, which are a part of a same-titled project.  They are long exposures photographs and capture the entire duration of a performed activity unfolding in front of the camera.  Through repetitive, mundane tasks carried out within the boundaries of the photographers‘ home, he attempts to reveal how traces of our existence appear while time passes by.  As a result the photograph contains time and movement condensed within a still image.   

During the long exposure the image constantly destroys and renews itself.   Each moment passes and what remains is the ambience of overlapping moments in a constant flux; like the diverse, ephemeral nature of our existence.   

The photos have a very intimate or even voyeuristic quality, as the viewer enters the photographers’ home and can linger over every detail of the space with his figure somewhat or altogether transparent.


Maria K Steinsson received an MA degree in Fine Art Photography from Kingston University in 2012 and a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Painting from City and Guilds of London Art School in 2008.
