Árbær Open Air Museum

The exhibition features a large collection of toys from various periods from the Reykjavík City Museum's collection. This is an interactive exhibition with an emphasis on creativity, imagination, and fun.

Playing shop has long been popular. Before the era of convenience stores and supermarkets, most shopping was done in small neighborhood shops where the shopkeepers served customers over the counter, such as at Lúllabúð on Hverfisgata.

The toys in the exhibition are not only for viewing — visitors can also play with toys from different periods at various time stations. These stations recreate the atmosphere of a Reykjavík working‑class home in the early 20th century, a middle‑class home from around 1930, a hippie household from the 1970s, and children’s rooms from around 1990. You can also play shop in Lúllabúð, which dates from around 1950, and try your hand at performing in a theatre and a puppet theatre.

The exhibition focuses on children's culture, toys and games in the last century. It is housed in a former church and sports hall called Landakot. The exhibition is interactive and it suits children in all age groups. Open at the same time as the museum.
