Árbæjarsafn er útisafn sem var stofnað árið 1957 en auk Árbæjar eru þar yfir tuttugu hús, sem mynda torg, þorp og sveit. Í Árbæjarsafni er leitast við að gefa hugmynd um byggingalist og lifnaðarhætti í Reykjavík á 19. og 20. öld. Hvert og eitt hús geymir annaðhvort sjálfstæða sögusýningu eða þá að þar er sýnt dæmigert heimili frá ákveðnu tímabili. Á safninu má einnig sjá gamaldags verkstæði ýmiskonar þar sem sjá má dæmigerða aðstöðu, tækni og tól.

Árbær was an established farm well into the 20th century, and the museum opened there in 1957. Árbær is now an open-air museum with more than 20 buildings which form a town square, a village and a farm. Most of the buildings have been relocated from central Reykjavik. The Museum seeks to give an idea of architecture and way of life in Reykjavik in the 19th and 20th centuries. Each house contains either an independent historical exhibition or a typical home from a specific period. The museum also houses old-fashioned workshops of typical facilities, technology and tools.

The guide takes guests to all the main houses of the museum and tells their story.

Jólaundirbúningur er í fullum gangi í bænum. Í Árbæ sker fólk út laufabrauð, kembir ull og spinnur garn. Í Hábæ bjóða húsbændur gestum að smakka íslenskt hangikjöt og í Nýlendu tálgar maður skemmtilegar fígúrur úr tré. Kæsta skatan er komin í pottinn í Efstabæ og í Miðhúsum eru prentuð falleg jólakort. 

Kaffiilmur berst frá Dillonshúsi en þar er upplagt að setjast niður fá sér tíu dropa og smá bakkelsi með. Í hesthúsinu í Garðastræti eru hjúin í óðaönn að steypa kerti úr tólgi. Jólahald heldra fólks við upphaf 20. aldar er sýnt í Suðurgötu 7 og í Krambúðinni er kramarhús, konfekt og ýmis jólavarningur til sölu.

Bílastæði fyrir hreyfihamlaða eru við inngang safnsins. Öll bílastæði eru ókeypis.

With activities in all areas of the museum, there will be plenty for visitors of all ages to see and do while strolling between the charming traditional houses and taking in the festive Christmas atmosphere. Those naughty Christmas Lads will be out and about, and we will sing and dance with them around the Christmas tree.
The Christmas preparations are in full swing in the village. At the Árbær farm, you can see how traditional Icelandic Leaf Bread is decorated and how sheep wool is spun. Visitors to Hábær will be able to get a taste of traditional Icelandic hangikjöt (smoked lamb), and at Nýlenda House, a man is carving funny figures out of wood.
At Efstibær, the customary Skate fish, with its awful smell, is cooking in the pot, while at Miðhús, the printer makes Christmas cards. 

Freshly brewed coffee awaits at Dillon's Café—the perfect spot to recharge with some delightful refreshments. At the Stable in Garðastræti, candles are traditionally made. The Christmas celebration at the beginning of the 20th century is depicted at Suðurgata 7, while the museum shop offers a variety of sweets and Christmas goods for sale.

Practical Information
Accessibility: The museum’s footpaths are mainly gravel. Many historic houses have steps and thresholds. Service dogs are welcome. 
Public Transport:
Nearest bus stop: Árbæjarsafn (1-minute walk). 
Other stops: Laxakvísl and Fagribær (5–6 minutes away).
Free parking, including blue-badge parking spots opposite the entrance, is available.

### Aldís Arnardóttir
#### Director of Hafnarborg Centre of Culture and Fine Art, Hafnarfjörður, Iceland

Aldís has been the director of Hafnarborg Centre of Culture and Fine Art since 2021 and has been  involved in the planning and staging of numerous exhibitions and events. Hafnarborg has been a long term partner of the Iceland Photography Festival.

Prior to that Aldís worked as an independent art historian and exhibition curator. She was an art critic at Morgunblaðið newspaper and taught art history at the visual arts department of the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts. She has worked on research in the field of visual arts, written articles in books and catalogues, has taken on roles of a confidant as well as other roles within various organisations.

Her main curatorial projects are: Ásgerður Búadóttir – Facets of Life, Reykjavík Art Museum, 2020. The Wheel, Reykjavik Association of Sculptors, 2019. Kjarval: Líðandin – La dureé, Reykjavík Art Museum 2018. KAPALL, Skaftfell, 2018.
Aldís graduaded with an MA in Art History from the University of Iceland in 2014 and a BA in Art History, with Cutural Studies as a minor in 2012, also from the University of Iceland.


### Anna Tellgren
#### Curator of Photography and Head of Research at Moderna Museet, Stockholm

Anna Tellgren is Curator of Photography and Head of Research at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. She has curated numerous exhibitions including Lars Tunbjörk. Winter/Home (2007), Moderna Museet Now: Inta Ruka (2008) and Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff Alternative Secrecy (2021). The exhibition Francesca Woodman. On Being an Angel (2015) has been touring internationally for several years. During 2011 she was responsible for the project Another Story. Photography from the Moderna Museet Collection – a major presentation of photography in the entire museum. In 2023 she was in the curatorial team of the exhibition Søsterskap Contemporary Nordic Photography at Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles. Among her most recent publications are contributions in A World History of Women Photographers (2022), Fotografihistorier. Fotografi och bildbruk i Sverige (2022) a new history of Swedish photography, and in the book Deborah Turbeville Photocollage, published by Thames & Hudson in 2023.

### Guðbrandur Benediktsson
#### Director of the Reykjavík City Museum

Guðbrandur has an MA in history from the University of Iceland and an MA in museum studies from Gothenburg University. In his history studies he specialized in photographic history and photographs as sources for research and tools for communication.

Guðbrandur started working at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography in 1998 and then at Árbær Open Air Museum in 2005. Since 2014, he has been the director of the Reykjavík City Museum, since its foundation that year. He has worked as an adjunct and part-time teacher at the University of Iceland, i.a. program in Practical Cultural Exchange, in History and Tourism Studies. He has held various confidential positions in the field of professional social affairs, e.g. on the board of the Association of Icelandic Historians, in the Icelandic Museums Association (FÍSOS), Iceland Division of ICOM, in the The Museum Council of Iceland and the University Council. 


### Holly Roussell
#### Curator, Museologist and Art Historian, spezialising in Photography and Asian Contemporary Art, Switzerland/China

Holly Roussell is graduate of Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland, with a MA in Museology. She also holds a BA in Art History. She previously served as coordinator of the worldwide travelling exhibitions program, as well as the photography prize, the Prix Elysée, for the Musée de l’Elysée from 2013-2017.  She is a curator with the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, China since 2021, and served as artistic advisor leading to the opening of Fotografiska Shanghai, from 2021- 2023. In 2022, she was invited guest curator for the Curiosa section for emerging artists at the leading international art fair for photography, Paris Photo. 

Roussell has organized more than 20 group and solo exhibitions around the world (Folkwang Museum; MUCEM; Les Rencontres d’Arles; Somerset House; NGV Melbourne; Lianzhou Photography Festival; OCT-Loft Shenzhen; Shanghai Centre of Photography; Auckland Art Gallery; Fotografiska; MMCA: Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, among other institutions).

She is a regular expert to international portfolio reviews and has participated in juries such as the Aperture Photobook Award, Landskrona & Breadfield Dummy Book Award, PhMuseum Womens Photography Grant, Musée du Quai Branly Prix pour la photographie, Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award among others. Roussell regularly contributes as author to exhibition catalogues and magazines on photography, Chinese art, museology and curating. 
In 2024, she published the first monograph of Chinese experimental artist and photographer "Mo Yi: Selected Photographs 1988-2003" with Thames & Hudson, UK.



### Ingibjörg Jóhannsdóttir
#### Museum Director of the National Gallery of Iceland

Ingibjörg was appointed museum director of the National Gallery of Iceland in 2022. Previously, she had worked in educational institutions, focusing on art and creative learning; for 18 years as a teacher, head of department and principal of the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts and for nine years as principal of Landakotsskóli. 
Ingibjörg has also taught at the Iceland University of the Arts. She has curated exhibitions in Iceland, Sweden and the United States, mainly in the field of graphic art. She has also made and published graphic works in collaboration with visual artists and for years was the manager of the international photography course of the American photographer Mary Ellen Mark in Iceland. Ingibjörg completed a MA in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in 1994.

### Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen
#### Managing Director of Copenhagen Photo Festival

Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen (born in DK and holds a MA from the University of Copenhagen), has been Managing Director of Copenhagen Photo Festival since 2016 with an increasing interest in experimental and outdoor exhibition concepts in her striving for a more accessible and sustainable festival format.
She has a strong focus on international and long-term collaborations across Europe and has worked with many art and photography institutions, festivals and photographers as a juror member, portfolio reviewer, curator and project manager. She has been in charge of numerous photography-based projects with partners across the culture field and has worked in the culture industry for the last 20 years.


### Pål Otnes
#### Editor of Fotografi and Communication Adviser at Preus Museum, Norway

Pål Otnes lives in Oslo, Norway and works at Preus museum, the national museum of Photography. He holds a bachelor i social science from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and later studied digital journalism at Volda University College. He was as an editor at Forlaget Fotografi for ten years, focusing on web and photobooks, and later the magazine Fotografi. He is now a communication adviser at Preus museum, mainly working as a picture editor for Fotografi magazine and as a program coordinator at the international photo festival Oslo Negativ. 


### Þröstur Helgason
#### Founder and owner of KIND Publishing

Þröstur Helgason is the founder and owner of KIND Publishing, which specializes in publishing books on visual arts, photography, and cultural history. Helgason holds a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Iceland. His latest book, Opna svæðið. Tímaritið Birtingur og íslenskur módernismi (2020), is on the Icelandic modernist magazine Birtingur and modernism in Iceland. Helgason has had a long career as a literary critic and cultural journalist and was for many years the editor of the cultural supplement of the daily newspaper Morgunblaðið and the head of Radio One at The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. He has been a lecturer at the University of Iceland and the Iceland University of the Arts and has contributed to journals and books on literature, cultural history, and visual arts, including a book about the artist Birgir Andrésson (Birgir Andrésson. In Icelandic Colors, 2010).
