Reykjavík Museum of Photography

The competition began in 1992 and the exhibition at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography is a selection of works from the competition over the past five years. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Goethe Zentrum in Iceland and the Museum of Applied Arts in Gera, Germany, which owns all the works in the exhibition.

Biermann is considered one of the most significant artists of the New Photography (Neue Fotografie), which developed alongside New Objectivity in the 1930s in Germany.

The prize is awarded in memory of the artist Aenne Biermann (1898–1933), who lived and worked in Gera from 1921 until her long-ago death. Biermann is considered one of the most important artists of the New Photography (Neue Fotografie) that developed alongside the New Objectivity movement in Germany in the 1930s. The Museum of Applied Arts in Gera has one of the largest collections of works by Biermann and was the initiator of the Aenne Biermann Prize for contemporary German photography.

The aim of the Aenne Biermann Award is to strengthen photography as an artistic medium, guided by precision and aesthetic demands in the spirit of Biermann. The 52 photographs in the exhibition, whether the award-winning images or others, bear witness to the great growth of contemporary photography in Germany.
