Árbær Open Air Museum

It is important for museums to offer material that can be described as contemporary history. This provides an opportunity to explore aspects of the past that are closer to people in time and connected to the lives of generations who are still active today.

At the forefront is a discussion of two cultural movements — disco and punk. These movements share many similarities, yet in many ways are also remarkably different — which makes comparing them especially interesting.

The exhibition highlights the main characteristics of these cultural movements, their background, origins, and influence. The material also allows visitors to compare other movements and fashion trends with this history.

The exhibition is a collaborative project between the Reykjavík City Museum and Smekkleysa SM ehf.

Disco & Punk - different currents? The exhibition seeks to explain and convey the culture of young people in Reykjavík and the surrounding area during the years 1975 to 1985.
