The buildings which have caught the eye of French photographer Jo Duchene are diverse: large, small, old, new, imposing or dilapidated. He chooses his subjects on architectural and sociological grounds: buildings which tell of history and culture, and reflect the Icelandic national consciousness.
 
Duchene lays emphasis on being neutral towards the work. He brings an outsider’s eye to the landscape of Icelandic buildings. He sees them with a “French eye,” grounded in French culture. He enjoys the lively decoration of buildings in all the colours of the rainbow, in concrete, wood or corrugated iron. He enjoys the multicoloured exuberance, so at odds with architectural conventions in Iceland today.


The exhibition is a journey into cultural nooks and crannies around Iceland. Not only does it raise questions on the character and nature of the buildings; it also places them in the context of cultural history. This series of images seeks to make the observer stop and think about Icelandic architecture, and where it springs from: _Made in Iceland._
