What stands before our eyes is not what we really see. We only know the world around us through our personal perception, but the particular vision every person has may not correspond with reality. And, as an artist and a photographer, I think that is a wonderful thing. 

“What I See” is an ongoing project that started in Madrid (Spain) in 2011, heavily influenced by the popular culture, in which I photographed what reality suggested me, making use of the graphic element to transform what was there into what I saw. The series reached its maturity in Kansas City (USA), where the previous watercolor drawings and paper signs were substituted by lines of chalk, charcoal and markers directly on the surfaces on display.


I'm interested in the different interpretations quotidian situations may have. I want to communicate what it is I'm seeing when I look at my surroundings and I want people to see my work, to smile, to wonder what they would have seen in the same situation, and to decide if they agree with me or not. I want them to go back to their routine and suddenly see something different when they look at the same objects, at the same place, at the same life. Because I firmly believe that art can be used to make a better world through big, committed statements but also with small, innocent gestures.


Laura Andrés Esteban is a Spanish artist devoted to both photography and humor. She obtained her MFA degree in 2012 at University of Castilla-La Mancha (Cuenca, Spain).
Her professional interests include exploring the relationship between photography and illustration, the multiple uses of vegetables as subjects and, in general, creating understandable images that make people smile.
