It is a fine example of the neoclassical-style wooden houses which were built in Reykjavík in the 19th century. Inside Suðurgata 7 we now have an opportunity to explore homes of two different kinds around 1925. In the western part of the building is the home of a prosperous middle-class family who enjoy such modern conveniences as electricity, running water and a WC. The eastern part is the home of a widow who rents out rooms to boarders – a student from outside Reykjavík, and a single mother with her son. The widow also earns some income from sewing. 

Note that these do not represent real inhabitants of this specific building: the homes are intended to serve as examples of how people lived in Reykjavík in the 1920s. 


Inside Suðurgata 7 we now have an opportunity to explore homes of two different kinds around 1925.

Suðurgata 7, built in 1833 in central Reykjavík, was enlarged in stages. It has been in its present form since 1883.
