Árbæjarsafn er útisafn sem var stofnað árið 1957 en auk Árbæjar eru þar yfir tuttugu hús, sem mynda torg, þorp og sveit. Í Árbæjarsafni er leitast við að gefa hugmynd um byggingalist og lifnaðarhætti í Reykjavík á 19. og 20. öld. Hvert og eitt hús geymir annaðhvort sjálfstæða sögusýningu eða þá að þar er sýnt dæmigert heimili frá ákveðnu tímabili. Á safninu má einnig sjá gamaldags verkstæði ýmiskonar þar sem sjá má dæmigerða aðstöðu, tækni og tól.

Árbær was an established farm well into the 20th century, and the museum opened there in 1957. Árbær is now an open-air museum with more than 20 buildings which form a town square, a village and a farm. Most of the buildings have been relocated from central Reykjavik. The Museum seeks to give an idea of Reykjavik's architecture and way of life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Each house contains an independent historical exhibition or a typical home from a specific period. The museum also houses old-fashioned workshops on typical facilities, technology, and tools.

The guide takes guests to all the main houses of the museum and tells their stories. The guided tour is in English and takes just over an hour.

Í Aðalstræti 10 og 16 er sýning um hvernig Reykjavík hefur breyst frá landnámi til dagsins í dag. Leiðsögnin byrjar í Aðalstræti 16 þar sem er rúst af húsi frá 10. öld og sýning um líf fyrstu íbúa Reykjavíkur. Leiðsögnin heldur áfram í elsta húsi í miðbæ Reykjavíkur, Aðalstræti 10. Þar er sýning um þróun Reykjavíkur til dagsins í dag.

Katleen Abbeel talar íslensku sem annað mál. Hún er leiðsögumaður, þýðandi og íslenskukennari. Safnið er góður staður til að æfa íslensku.

At Aðalstræti 10 and 16, there is an exhibition about how Reykjavík has changed from the time of settlement to the present day.
The tour begins at Aðalstræti 16, where there is a ruin of a house from the 10th century and an exhibition about the lives of Reykjavík’s first inhabitants.
The tour continues to the oldest house in downtown Reykjavík, Aðalstræti 10, where there is an exhibition about the development of Reykjavík up to the present.

Katleen Abbeel speaks Icelandic as a second language. She is a guide, translator, and Icelandic teacher.
The museum is a great place to practice Icelandic.

Aðgengi: Gangstígar á safnsvæðinu eru flestir malarstígar. Inn í flest húsin er gengið upp eitt þrep eða yfir þröskuld. Hjálparhundar eru velkomnir í safnið. 

Strætisvagnar: Næsta stoppistöð heitir Árbæjarsafn (1 mín. gangur). Aðrar nálægar stoppistöðvar heita Laxakvísl og Fagribær (5-6 mín. gangur). Bílastæði fyrir hreyfihamlaða eru við inngang safnsins. Öll bílastæði eru ókeypis.

Practical Information

Accessibility: The museum’s footpaths are mainly gravel. Many historic houses have steps and thresholds. Service dogs are welcome. 

Public Transport:
Nearest bus stop: Árbæjarsafn (1-minute walk). 
Other stops: Laxakvísl and Fagribær (5–6 minutes away).

FREE parking, including blue-badge parking spots opposite the entrance, is available.

Celebrate Advent and Christmas in the old-fashioned way at the Árbær Open Air Museum on Sunday, 7th of December, and 14th December from 13:00 to 16:00.

The ever-popular Christmas program, at Árbær Open Air Museum has become a fixture of the Reykjavík´s Christmas calendar. Visitors, young and old, will enjoy experiencing the Christmas preparation and celebration of days gone by. This includes preparation of traditional Icelandic Christmas food and crafts, for example candle making. Playful Yule Lads (traditional Icelandic Santa Clauses) peep through windows and play tricks on guests.

The Christmas preparations are in full swing in the village. At the Árbær farm, you can see how traditional Icelandic Leaf Bread is decorated and how sheep wool is spun. Visitors to Hábær will be able to get a taste of traditional Icelandic hangikjöt (smoked lamb), and at Nýlenda House, a man is carving funny figures out of wood.
At Efstibær, the customary Skate fish, with its awful smell, is cooking in the pot, while at Miðhús, the printer makes Christmas cards. At the Stable in Garðastræti, candles are traditionally made and at Suðurgata 7 the Christmas celebration at the beginning of the 20th century is depicted. 

Traditional Christmas sweets will be on offer in the General Store and freshly brewed coffee and hot chocolate awaits at Dillon's Café—the perfect spot to recharge with some delightful refreshments.

Admission is free for children, people with disabilities and City Card holders. Others pay ISK 2,450

Please note that the programme ends at 16:00, but the museum is open until 17:00.

Christmas Programme at Árbær Open Air Museum

Bráðum koma blessuð jólin er yfirskrift jóladagskrár Árbæjarsafns sunnudagana 7. og 14. desember en þá daga gefst gestum tækifæri að njóta aðventunnar og upplifa jólin eins og þau voru í Reykjavík í þá gömlu góðu daga.

Jólaundirbúningur er í fullum gangi í bænum. Í Árbæ sker fólk út laufabrauð, kembir ull og spinnur garn. Í Hábæ bjóða húsbændur gestum að smakka íslenskt hangikjöt og í Nýlendu tálgar maður skemmtilegar fígúrur úr tré. Kæsta skatan er komin í pottinn í Efstabæ og í Miðhúsum eru prentuð falleg jólakort. 

Í hesthúsinu í Garðastræti eru hjúin í óðaönn að steypa kerti úr tólgi. Jólahald heldra fólks við upphaf 20. aldar er sýnt í Suðurgötu 7 og í Krambúðinni er kramarhús, konfekt og ýmis jólavarningur til sölu. 
Kaffiilmur berst frá Dillonshúsi en þar er upplagt að setjast niður fá sér tíu dropa og smá bakkelsi með.

14:00-16:00 Jólasveinar skemmta gestum á víð og dreif um safnsvæðið og taka þátt í söng og dansi. 
14:00 Guðsþjónusta í safnkirkjunni 
15:00 Sungið og dansað í kringum jólatréð á torgi safnsins 

Frítt inn fyrir börn, öryrkja og menningarkortshafa. Aðrir greiða 2.450 kr. 

Vinsamlegast athugið að dagskráin endar kl. 16 en safnið er opið til kl. 17.

A Live roleplay improv (LARP) will take place at Árbær Open Air Museum on Sunday, 2 November, where the group will make use of the museum’s historical setting. This event is closed and exclusively for members of the group Midnight Sun.
