Viking Glass Bead Making on Museum Night

Viking Glass Bead Making on Museum Night

Welcome to the Settlement Exhibition Aðalstræti on Museum Night, Friday 6 February. At 18:00-20:00 we invite visitors to watch a glass blower will shape beads over an open fire and participate in a bead workshop. Free entry and everyone is welcome! Glassblower Fanndís Huld Valdimarsdóttir specializes in recreating glass beads from the Viking era. On Museum Night she will show how glass is melted and shaped into beads over an open fire. She uses both new methods and old ones, the way of the Vikings. During the Viking era, having beautiful glass beads was a great status symbol and a very valuable currency. Such beads are often found in excavations, for example in pagan graves. There will also be a bead workshop, where kids can try their hand at making necklaces and bracelets from colorful beads. The event is part of the Reykjavík City Museum’s Museum Night programme.

Accessibility is good in Aðalstræti. Please note that the lighting is rather dim inside the exhibition hall by the ruins, and the floor is uneven in some places. Guide dogs are welcome at the museum.
