On Saturday 6 June at 13:00-16:00, Árbær Open Air Museum and Björk Bjarnadóttir, folklorist will offer education and hands-on instruction in nearly everything related to creating a rhubarb garden, caring for it, harvesting rhubarb, and making rhubarb jam. Participants will also learn about the history of rhubarb cultivation, its medicinal properties, and stories associated with it. Registration is necessary. Please register here: https://outlook.office.com/book/vidburdir_borgarsogusafn@reykjavik.is/?ismsaljsauthenabled The course costs 3.100 kr. and is paid on-site.

Participants need to bring the following: A knife for chopping rhubarb, a cutting board, a packed lunch, your own apron. The course is for ages five and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Björk Bjarnadóttir, an environmental folklorist and storyteller of plants, will guide participants through the five rhubarb gardens at Árbær Open Air Museum, each more beautiful than the last. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in harvesting rhubarb—a skill that has been fading over time. Everyone will get to taste rhubarb dipped in sugar, a nostalgic treat many remember from picking a stalk behind someone’s house on a lovely summer day. We will chop the rhubarb, and participants will get to take home: Freshly harvested rhubarb, rhubarb root, rhubarb jam, recipes for the jam, root, and a delightful rhubarb cake While the jam is simmering, Björk will share insights into the medicinal uses and history of rhubarb, along with other related stories. Welcome! Accessibility: The museum’s footpaths are mainly gravel. Many historic houses have steps and thresholds. Service dogs are welcome. Public Transport: Nearest bus stop: Árbæjarsafn (1-minute walk). Other stops: Laxakvísl and Fagribær (5–6 minutes away). Free parking, including blue-badge parking spots opposite the entrance, is available.
