Spinning Wool and Magic on Museum Night

Spinning Wool and Magic on Museum Night

We welcome you to join us for a night of spinning wool and magic on Museum Night, Friday, 7 February at 20:00. Free admission and everyone is welcome.

During the Viking Age, few skills were as essential as knowing how to spin using a spindle. Without this knowledge, Iceland would have never been discovered, as all textiles were woven from wool thread, including the large sails of the Viking ships as well as clothing, blankets, and diapers for children. On Museum Night, Marianne Guckelsberger, a spinner, and Vilborg Davíðsdóttir, an author, will teach guests of the Settlement Exhibition how to spin on a spindle and share stories of women from ancient tales who practiced spinning magic to hide men on the run and make others lose their memory. Wool, spindles, and whorls will be available on-site for guests who wish to try stretching wool and spinning thread. Accessibility is good in Aðalstræti. Please note that the lighting is rather dim inside the exhibition hall by the ruins, and the floor is uneven in some places. Guide dogs are welcome at the museum. Buses stop at the Town Hall (2 minutes walk) and at Lækjargata (5 minutes walk).
