Viðey Island is one of Iceland’s most historic places, its archaeological remains dating back to Iceland’s settlement period. The island boasts two of the country’s oldest buildings: the Viðey Church and Viðey House.

Caraway Harvesting with Björk Bjarnadóttir
The Caraway Seeds on Viðey Island are ripe enough to harvest, and you are invited for a memorable and educational harvesting trip on 15 August at 13:15 with Björk Bjarnadóttir, environmentalist and ethnologist. Please remember to buy your ferry tickets beforehand at elding.is Bring a cloth bag, a small knife or a pair of scissors for this event. The ferry will depart from Skarfabakki at 13:15. Björk will welcome the walk participants by the church on Viðey island. The walk itself takes about 1,5–2 hours. The ferry will sail back after the walk is over.

Czy byłeś kiedyś na wyspie Viðey? W niedzielę 16 sierpnia w godzinach 13:00–15:30 odbędzie się oprowadzanie w języku polskim po Viðey. Przewodniczką będzie Marta Wieczorek, wicedyrektorka Szkoły Polskiej w Reykjavíku. Viðey to wspaniałe miejsce do spędzania czasu na świeżym powietrzu w wyjątkowym otoczeniu. Znajduje się tam wiele ciekawych miejsc historycznych, plaże oraz instalacje sztuki plenerowej.

Evening walk I Viðey Monastery: 800 Years
Step back into Iceland’s medieval past with archaeologist Margrét Hallgrímsdóttir, who led the first excavation of the Viðey Monastery (1987–1995). This year marks 800 years since the monastery was founded in 1226 — and the discoveries from the dig remain some of the most remarkable evidence of monastic life in Iceland and Northern Europe. Ferry from Skarfabakki at 20:00, returning no later than 23:00. The event is free, but ferry tickets must be purchased — buying ahead is recommended.
